Previous to "Smart Lens" Implants, the only options for presbyopic patients were bifocals, bifocal contact lenses (which had a very low success rate), and CustomVue® Lasik for monovision. Monovision refers to having one eye corrected for distance vision and the other eye corrected for near or reading vision. The brain makes an adjustment to accommodate for the different inputs coming into each of the eyes.
The "Smart Lens" Implants offer patients true binocular multifocal vision. This is an exciting new option for adults who have avoided LASIK because of the possible need for reading glasses following correction of their distance vision. Much like cataract surgery, in this surgical procedure, the natural lens of the eye, which has refractive errors is removed and the "Smart Lens" is inserted. Because the eye’s natural lens is removed in this procedure, these patients never develop cataracts later in life. If the patient needs an astigmatic correction after receiving a "Smart Lens" Implant, a laser procedure is performed with our own AMO/VISX S4 Excimer Laser System®. The risks and complications for the “Smart Lens” procedure are the same as for cataract surgery, and if needed, LASIK.
Selecting a Surgeon for a "Smart Lens" Implant
Selecting the right physician for refractive surgery with a "Smart Lens" Implant is an important decision. Not only does the surgeon have to have excellent skills in cataract surgery, but also excellent skills in Lasik and Vision Correction Surgery. These surgeons are known as "Hybrid Surgeons". Prior to having cataract surgery, inquire as to whether or not the surgeon is a "Hybrid Surgeon" who is skillful in both cataract surgery and Laser Vision Correction. Currently, the "Smart Lens" implants do not correct for astigmatism, which is a companion procedure to the lens implant. All of the surgeons in our practice are not only excellent cataract surgeons, but also exceptional Laser Vision Correction surgeons. Traditionally, cataract surgeons have not embraced becoming LASIK surgeons. Conversely, most "LASIK Only" surgeons stopped performing cataract surgery years ago to focus on LASIK alone. These surgeons may no longer have hospital privileges, and their skills in cataract surgery may be quite rusty. There are a few ophthalmologists in each part of the country that have obtained and maintained their skills in both areas. These "Hybrid Surgeons," with excellent skills in both Cataract Surgery and Laser Vision Correction, are the surgeons of .
