Scleral Lens Treatment

Dry Eye Center - Morris Eye Group

Scleral contact lenses are large diameter hard contact lenses that can be used to treat corneal irregularities and moderate to severe dry eye disease.

When fit properly, scleral lenses create a small tear reservoir between the contact lens and your eye which helps to keep your eye moist and comfortable throughout the day.

These large diameter lenses offer sharp vision, are easier to handle than conventional gas permeable lenses and are very comfortable on the eye.  Scleral lenses are large diameter rigid gas permeable lenses that range in size from 14.8 to 16.8 mm in diameter.  They are called “scleral” lenses because they completely cover the cornea and extend onto the sclera.

Traditionally, rigid gas permeable lenses were smaller than 10 mm in  diameter and were supported exclusively by the cornea.
Scleral lenses are supported exclusively by the scleral and vault the cornea.  This makes scleral lenses much more comfortable than the smaller corneal lenses.

Patients who could potentially benefit from scleral lenses are those with irregular or distorted corneas, patients with conditions that affect the tear layer and patients who are unable to wear other forms of correction.
You may benefit from scleral lenses if you have one of the following conditions:
  • Keratoconus
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Graft versus host disease
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Chronic inflammatory condition
  • Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid
  • Other cornea conditions
  • Post-corneal transplant
  • Severe dry eyes
  • Sjogrens syndrome
  •  Neurotrophic keratopathy
  • Limbal stem cell deficiency
  • Irregular astigmatism
  • Certain eyelid conditions
If you believe your eyes are too dry for other types of contact lenses or you feel as though previous dry eye treatment has been unsuccessful, scleral lenses may be a wonderful alternative. Call our office today to schedule a consultation to discuss your options and see if you are a suitable candidate for scleral lenses. In some cases, vision insurance my cover a portion of the fees associated with fitting these custom lenses
