There is a new option for patients that are nearsighted. A recent FDA approved Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) can eliminate or reduce the need for glasses. The physicians at were the first physicians in San Diego to implant the Visian® Implantable Contact Lens when it first came out three years ago.
The procedure to implant the contact lens is painless, fast and reversible. The Visian® ICL offers unparalleled quality of vision, providing excellent contrast. It is made of Collamer, a soft, flexible lens material that contains a small amount of collagen, making the lens extremely biocompatible for a lifetime of clear vision. The lens is placed inside of the eye, where it continues to focus light accurately without any maintenance required.

The lens itself is invisible and undetectable and is used to treat moderate to severe nearsightedness. It is the procedure of choice for patients with thin corneas and the Visian® ICL does not cause or contribute to dry eyes. Currently the lens does not correct astigmatism or farsightedness, however, it is anticipated that Visian will have lenses to correct for those visual problems in the near future.
